About LYT

Where are you located?
LYT currently rehearses for its productions and holds its workshops at Oldham County Schools Arts Center 7105 Floydsburg Road Crestwood, KY 40014.

How are LYT’s shows different from other community shows that appeal to young audiences?
We are different because all of the actors in our productions are comprised of youth age 7 to 18. The actors meet with the audience in the lobby after each show to sign autographs and talk. Children in the audience respond strongly to cast members onstage that are closer to their age, which makes for a different and more vivid experience than at other theatres.

What are the qualifications of LYT staff?
We are fortunate that the directors, teachers and staff of LYT programs are knowledgeable and experienced both in theatre arts and in education. Our high standards require that staff members hold performance credentials which dovetail with educational experience, and that they are able to bring out the best in our young performers.
How do I get involved in LYT?
First get on our mailing list so that you will receive all the information about our shows and workshops. Next, audition for the next upcoming show or register for one of our production summer camps.
How can we buy tickets?
Tickets can be ordered either by email or by calling 502-386-6567. All tickets are assigned (seat-specific), so you can rely on receiving the best seats available if you call ahead to reserve.
Can we pay by credit card?
No, LYT does not accept credit cards at this time. We accept cash and checks.

The Audition Process

Is it required to have taken classes or workshops in order to audition?
No, LYT does not require previous experience nor do we require that you take our acting classes in order to be in a LYT production.
How long does the audition process take?
The full process (informational meeting, review of conflicts calendar, registration and audition) takes approximately 1 to 2 hours.
Can I download or pick up the conflict calendar and audition packet in advance?
Yes! Click here to download Conflict Calendars and Audition Packets.
Can I audition for any show, regardless of my age?
No, you must be within the posted performer age range for the show at the time of the audition. We understand that you may look older or younger than your actual age or may have considerable experience or maturity, but we do not make exceptions under any circumstance.
What is required at auditions?
Each child must prepare a one minute monologue and 16 bars of a song.
What song should I sing?
Choose an audition song that you are comfortable with and that shows off your personality and voice at its best. Most directors prefer that you not sing a song from the show you are auditioning for, but are happy to hear you sing a song that is similar in tone or style to the show. At LYT, any song will do, and many first-time auditionees choose something like "Happy Birthday" or "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."
Should I bring sheet music or a CD?
An accompanist is provided at all LYT auditions for those wishing to bring sheet music and sing their song with live accompaniment. You will have a chance right before your individual audition to give your sheet music to the accompanist, tell them where to start and stop, and what tempo you’d like the song played. You may also choose to bring a CD that has the instrumental music of the song you wish to sing.

What are callbacks?
Callbacks are an opportunity for the production staff to see you one more time before making final casting decisions.

When will I know what role I got?
The cast list is usually posted online within a week or two after the audition.
If I don’t like my part, can I quit?
Yes, but you will not be allowed to audition for the next show and your tuition fee will not be refunded. We strongly discourage performers from quitting if they don’t get the role they like, because we believe that every role is important and the experience of being part of the production is more important than being the lead. Also, many times a role you didn’t really want can surprise you and be more fun than you ever dreamed.

Costs to Participate
How much does it cost to be in a LYT production?
The tuition fee, or your cost to participate in the show, is $185.00. This can be broken down into monthly payments of $75.00. Your cost for costumes will vary depending upon what role(s) you are cast for and how many costumes you will need. Estimate $40.00 to $80.00 for your costume rental fee. A make-up starter kit containing base, lipstick, and eye liner will run approximately $30.00. Cast members do not receive complimentary tickets and individual ticket prices range from $5.00 to $7.00. Optional costs are T-Shirts, Personal Messages in the Program, Photographs, and the Cast Party.
Why do you charge tuition?
Like many nonprofit theater companies, we are not able to cover all of our production expenses with ticket sales. The additional money from tuition allows us to put on fully produced shows in a major theater venue and to provide our young actors the opportunity to work with outstanding theater professionals.

Rehearsal Schedules

What is the time commitment if you are cast in a LYT production?
Rehearsals take place 3 to 4 months prior to the performances. Typically, they take place 2 times a week and last 2 hours. Not all cast members will be scheduled to rehearse every time we meet. Generally, all cast members are at rehearsal at least once a week.

When are rehearsals?
Rehearsals are scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday. We meet from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
A detailed rehearsal schedule will be available at the Parents’ Meeting for your show. The final
two weeks of rehearsal are mandatory. Some of these rehearsals will go later in the evening.

What is Tech Week?
It is the final week of rehearsal. This important rehearsal period provides an opportunity for the cast to rehearse onstage and for the set, lighting, and sound designers to set the technical aspects of the show in time for performances. Rehearsals during tech week usually run from 4:00-6:30 or as late as 7:00.

What if I can’t make it to a rehearsal?
When cast for a part, each performer makes a commitment to attend all rehearsals for which they are called. If you are ill or will be late for a scheduled rehearsal, please call 386-6567 or 266-7460 and leave a message. If you know before auditions that you will not be available certain day(s), please note it on your Conflict calendar, which you will receive during the Informational Meeting or as part of your Audition Packet. Conflicts will not be accepted during the last ten days of rehearsal or during the performances. If you have too many conflicts on your form or have poor attendance during rehearsals, the director may recommend
that you not audition or withdraw from the show.

Volunteering

What is the volunteer time commitment for performer’s family?
Depending on how involved you wish to be, your total volunteer hours will vary from 10 to more hours over the course of approximately 3-4 months.

Why do you require volunteer participation?
While we are fortunate enough to have a professional production staff, parent volunteers are an essential component of each LYT show.
